$100,000 House For Only $265,000

I've been looking at the 100K house project lately. The idea is pretty interesting: build an approximately 1000 square foot green home in Phillie for a hundred thousand dollars in construction costs. It satisfies both my love of green building and penchent for round numbers. Unfortunately it's as misleading as the initial description of the Titanic as "unsinkable".

The hundred grand only covers the construction costs, the land, permits, architect etc. is extra. It makes for a bit of a disconnect when you try to sell the 100K house for about two and a half times the price.

Check it out:

We get this from time to time from people who don't understand development and all the costs associated. The title was never meant to be a slick marketing ploy, but instead was meant to be a case study to prove that green building can be done MORE affordably than standard construction.

I along with my wife will be living in the 100K House which is not for sale. The house you are referring to is the corner house that is very similar to the 100K but a bit of an upgraded version that will not come in at the $100K target.

In the future, no number will be associated with the names of our houses in order to eliminate this disconnect that you mention.

Hey Chad,
As someone who DOES understand the costs associated with development my ears pricked up when I read about your 100K House project. I wasn't looking to call BS when I looked into it, I was genuinely excited that someone had pulled the rabbit from the hat.

I have a lot of respect for what you're doing, the post was really just a critique of the name and to draw a little traffic to you. I'm glad to hear that you'll be scrapping it in the future and I wish you the best of luck.
